Modern Casambi projects often work very flexibly on a local level – but at the same time need to connect with existing DALI installations, remote service, dashboards, BMS, KNX or IoT systems. This is where the right gateway architecture becomes essential.
Not every Casambi project needs a gateway. Gateways become relevant when two system worlds need to communicate with each other – for example for remote access, DALI integration or external automation logic. This was also the central message of the webinar “Integrations & Gateways – Integrating Casambi Into Larger Systems.”
With Exceedation, you receive technical support for evaluating requirements, selecting the right integration path and implementing a clean project solution.
In many projects, Casambi itself is not the challenge. The real question is how Casambi should be connected cleanly with other systems.
One project needs remote access. Another needs to keep existing DALI luminaires in use. Another requires a connection to a dashboard, BMS, KNX or external automation logic. When these requirements are solved without a clear architecture, duplicated logic, unnecessary interfaces and uncertainty during planning, commissioning and operation can quickly appear.
Casambi gateways are interfaces between the Casambi mesh and other system worlds. They open Casambi where communication with external systems is required.
This can mean remote access through a Cloud Gateway. It can mean integrating existing DALI luminaires through Salvador. It can also mean making Casambi addressable by a DALI system through a DCS DALI Gateway. For external automation logic, dashboards or IoT platforms, MQTT often becomes relevant. Further integrations such as KNX, BACnet, DMX or Matter depend strongly on the specific project.
Key points for gateway selection:

Remote access and maintenance
Modernizing existing DALI
DALI system remains leading
Dashboard or IoT logic
BMS integration
Building automation
Scene and architectural lighting
Smart home / residential
Possible integration path
Casambi Cloud Gateway
Casambi Salvador

DALI and Casambi can work very well together. The decisive point is the direction of integration.
With Salvador, DALI luminaires are integrated into Casambi. This is especially relevant for retrofit and refurbishment projects where existing DALI infrastructure should remain in use. With a DCS DALI Gateway, Casambi becomes addressable for a DALI system. This is useful when the DALI control system remains the leading system and Casambi is added as a wireless extension.
The Cloud Gateway is relevant when Casambi networks need to be supported remotely. This is especially useful for retail chains, operator-managed projects and installations with multiple locations.
Adjustments to scenes, groups or settings can be checked faster. Service cases do not automatically need to become on-site visits. The value is strongest when remote access is considered early in the planning phase — including IT, network and responsibilities.
MQTT becomes interesting when Casambi needs to communicate with dashboards, automation servers or IoT platforms.
In many projects, it is not useful to control every luminaire individually from the outside. It is often more stable to transfer scenes, groups or operating modes.
For classic building automation, KNX, BACnet or BMS interfaces may also become relevant. The important point is always the clear separation between local lighting logic and higher-level control.
Technically, many things are possible. But not every connection makes a project better.
Casambi should be used where its strengths are: local lighting logic, scenes, groups, sensors and flexible operation. Gateways should create defined transitions. Higher-level systems should visualize, monitor or define operating modes without interfering too deeply in the local room logic.
The right Casambi integration starts with the right questions. What should be integrated? Who should control it? Which feedback is required? What happens if the gateway or internet connection fails?
Exceedation supports you in making exactly these decisions. We help evaluate the use case, select the integration path and coordinate lighting control, building systems and project requirements. The result is not a random combination of components, but a clear Casambi architecture for planning, installation, operation and service.
